“What is she doing here, Jalek! Have you lost all your senses, bringing her into enemy fire?” Malm said, voice booming like an explosion on its own.

Phoebe and the crew had made it over to the Penal ship without incident, only to discover the vessel’s power was at forty percent. Malm had thought a skeleton crew of his men were coming over to access the damage and enact his plans for evacuation. Instead, he’d bellowed some hard sounding alien curses when he saw Phoebe take off the helmet.

Malm didn’t scare her like he did the other warriors. She marched up to him and bent him down for a kiss of greeting. That threw him, since it was so out of character for the situation. The vessel rocked again as it took another hit from the battleship. She looked up at him to see her kiss had done what it was supposed to do, which was calm him back down. Well, a little.

“Malm, I’m here. This is what the Goddess wants. We’re supposed to fix this together—you got me? Stop making matters worse by getting angry with these warriors. They’re following Tordin’s orders to bring me here and help where they might.”

Malm stood there silently fuming as she spoke. She didn’t care. Phoebe knew this was fear for her safety causing him to act like a temperamental beast. She had to get some semblance of order established between the new warriors and the ones already here. Malm was too wound up to act rationally at the moment. She would be his right-hand mate as he got it together and helped them evacuate the ship.

“Malm?” she asked, testing his temperament. “Are you able to tell us the plan for evacuating and getting rid of the battleship?”

“I wanted to send a signal back to the mother ship to send over at least thirty more jumps to evacuate everyone. Then I was going to program the ship for a straight collision into the battleship, in the hope of damaging it. I know the battleship will be able to move in time to escape a straight-on hit, but not enough to escape unscathed.”

“Good, that sounds like a great plan. I have my vo-link with me. Are you able to use it to let Tordin know what your plans are? No one has been able to reach yours.”

“Yes, it should work,” he said and took the device and got Tordin on the line.

While he spoke with Tordin, she huddled the other warriors from her ship and asked them to start working with those on this level to find out what their medical needs were. By the time Malm finished his call, she had everyone working to get an up-to-date assessment on injuries and casualties.

Malm came to stand next to her and asked, “What do you have them doing?”

“Taking a count of casualties and injuries. If anyone’s hurt or needing medical attention, I can help with that. We can put the worse cases on the first ships to arrive, then work back from there.
